LAN basically means a computer network that spans a relatively smaller area. LAN cable is confined to a single building or group of buildings. However, one LAN cable can be connected to other LAN cable over any distance through telephone lines and radio waves. A system of LAN cables connected in this way is called a wide-area network.
Most LAN cables connect workstations and personal computers. Each node in a LAN has its own CPU with which it has the capability to execute programs, but LAN cable can also access data and devices anywhere on the LAN. This means that via LAN cables many users can share expensive devices like that of laser printers, as well as data. Users can also use the LAN cables to communicate with each other, by sending e-mail or very often engaging in chat sessions.
There are many types of LAN cables are used for the most common PCs. However, there are certain different features that differentiate one LAN from another. Topology, this is the geometric arrangement of devices on the network. For example, this allows the devices to be arranged in a ring or in a straight line. LAN cable sometimes connects devices by twisted-pair wire, coaxial cables, or by fiber optic cables.
LAN cables are also have the ability to transmit data at very fast rates, much faster even than the data that can be transmitted over a telephone line; but here the distances are limited, and there is also a limit on the number of computers that can be connected to a single LAN cable.
