Rechargeable battery, as the name suggests, can be recharged again and again. Since it can store charge, it is also known as storage battery. They are made up of a combination of secondary cells.
The working of a rechargeable battery is based on reversible electrochemical reactions taking place between the cathode and the anode. Rechargeable batteries are available in the market in different sizes of D, C, AA and AAA which suits various needs. Similarly, they are available with different chemical combinations.
Rechargeable cells can be expensive initially but rechargeable battery can be used again and again, giving economic and environmental benefits. One round of discharge and recharge is generally called a charge cycle. Different rechargeable batteries offer different charge cycles- ranging from 100 to 1000.
Normally, a rechargeable battery comes with a recharging case in which the battery is put and attached to the power supply. A recharging case assures safety and guarantee.
Rechargeable battery is non-toxic to the environment and surroundings as it can be used many times compared to disposable batteries which are dumped and are serious threats to nature.
A rechargeable battery is used in places where intermittent supply of current is required. One time usage of a device also prompts rechargeable batteries usage. For example, rechargeable battery comes handy during travels and journeys to charge mobile phones, PDAs and other items.
Rechargeable batteries should be chosen according to the size and power requirement as there is no point in investing money on unnecessary needs.
